THE HISTORIC PAST OF SPAM MUSUBI AND WHY YOU SHOULD ORDER IT

Ever wonder how Spam could be part of Japanese cuisine? Sushi Obsession, Vallejo is often asked about our Spam Musubi. Spam sushi, a creative mashup of different flavors, dates back to World War II.

More troops were sent to war zones after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Spam was one of the rations they sent. Spam, which had a long expiration date, was a staple food for military personnel because it could be eaten for many years. Spam became so popular that civilians could get their hands on the Spam cans. Ethnically Japanese locals came up with a creative way to use it in onigiri, a Japanese traditional snack consisting of rice compressed and wrapped in nori. Spam musubi was born from this simple addition.

We are geographically close to Hawaii so the influence of these islands has left an indelible impression on our West Coast. This iconic treat was a must-have on our menu.

Traditional Spam Musubi

Spam musubi is a Japanese dish that we recommend you try if you haven’t tried it before. Spam is deep-fried and placed on top of rice. Then, it’s wrapped in nori and topped off with teriyaki sauce. You can also add tamago (egg), and you’ll find the one that you love best.

Deep-Fried Spam Musubi

Our deep-fried Spam musubi version is considered comfort food by many, including Sushi Obsession’s owner Joanne Gutierrez. The one with tamago is the same. This version with tamago is a must-try. It has a crispy exterior that brings out the flavors.

Hot Cheeto Spam Musubi
